Ometepe is a unique island formed by two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America. Volcano Concepcion is the taller and more active of the two, known for its remarkably symmetrical cone shape that often wears a crown of "lenticular" clouds. The island is a biosphere reserve, rich in ancient petroglyphs and lush volcanic soil.
