Dominating the north side of Rossio Square, the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II is a neoclassical landmark founded by the intellectual Almeida Garrett in 1846. Despite a devastating fire in 1964 that left only the exterior walls standing, the theater was meticulously rebuilt and remains the beating heart of Portuguese drama, known for its iconic six-column portico and its dedication to the queen who gave it her name.
