Deadvlei, or "Dead Marsh," is a white clay pan frozen in time. Once a thriving oasis, the area dried up nearly 900 years ago, leaving behind scorched camel thorn trees that have been blackened by the sun but prevented from decomposing by the extreme aridity. Set against the "Big Daddy" dunes—the tallest in the world—the landscape is a study in impossible color contrasts.

This photograph captures the surreal, graphic nature of Namibia’s desert, where the deep orange of the sand meets the stark white of the pan and the skeletal silhouettes of the trees.
