While Lalibela is famous for its rock-hewn churches, the surrounding Lasta Mountains offer some of the most spectacular highland scenery in Africa. The mountains are characterized by volcanic rock and deep, jagged valleys that catch the light in dramatic ways. At sunset, the entire landscape turns a burnt orange, reflecting the rugged soul of the Ethiopian interior.
