Founded in 1604 by Augustinian Bishop Angelo Rocca, the Biblioteca Angelica was the first library in Rome—and one of the first in Europe—to be opened to the general public. The current structure, an 18th-century Baroque masterpiece designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli, houses nearly 200,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and "banned" texts that escaped the censors of the Counter-Reformation.
The photograph highlights the "Vaso"—the grand rectangular hall—with its majestic barrel vault and rhythmic wooden shelving. This print brings the scholarly atmosphere of ancient Rome into the modern home, making it an ideal choice for the collector who values history, symmetry, and the pursuit of forbidden knowledge.
