Housed within the monumental National Palace of Mafra, this 18th-century library is a breathtaking example of Portuguese Rococo design. Stretching an incredible 88 meters in length, it is paved with rose, grey, and white marble and lined with over 30,000 gold-embossed volumes. Legendarily, the library is home to a colony of small bats that are allowed to remain to protect the ancient books from paper-eating insects.
